AotC was 21.8 BBY but set in the year 22 BBY).So, what does the Star Wars canon timeline look like? Using the films as the anchors and the Battle of Yavin as a date point (BBY means before the Battle of Yavin, ABY means after the Battle of Yavin), let’s break down where the television series, books, and comics fall on the timeline. RotS was 18.8 BBY but set in the year 19 BBY. (As an aside, Legends did this, just with decimals. I always found 0 BBY as a dumb inclusion whenever it was used, so I'm glad it was cleared up. Just something to fix for the timeline in the next edition. This is the year from exactly 1 year before the battle of Yavin to, well, the Battle of Yavin itself. So, what this book thankfully does is dates Rogue One and the pre-Yavin stuff of A New Hope to the year 1 BBY.

For example, 19 BBY starts exactly 19 years before the battle and ends exactly 18 years before the battle. Each BBY year begins exactly X amount of years before the battle and ends exactly X-1 years before the battle. Where people get confused is the system before Yavin (BBY). The Yavin system is dated around the Battle of Yavin. The images of the book are on this pageĪs an explanation for those unaware, since I'm assuming the panel didn't go into the specifics and many people have been confused for years. Rogue One and the start of ANH take place in the year known as 1 BBY. Recent announcement from Celebration that's definitely something I appreciate: There's no such thing as 0 BBY.
